Best of SXSW 2022: BLACKSTARKIDS

Design by Morgan Seltzer

There’s something so incredibly exciting about hearing songs so explosively joyful bump through speakers around Austin’s coolest venues, especially when the folks performing those songs have such unforgettable stage presence. Enter BLACKSTARKIDS, one of the most memorable acts we saw this year at SXSW.

Hailing from Kansas City, MO, BLACKSTARKIDS makes music to dance with your friends to, and seeing them vibe in perfect sync together on stage, you couldn’t help but feel drawn into their performance. Each of the bandmates shine with ample solos, showcasing the unique style they each bring to the band in the perfect handshake of transitions from verse to verse.

BLACKSTARKIDS’ blend of a nostalgic 90’s pop sound with a glittery take on indie rock shone bright through the noise of this year’s festival. We had the chance to catch the band during their set at Paste Magazine’s 20th Anniversary Showcase and ahead of their headlining set the at the White Claw Surf House and left both sets smiling from ear to ear.
